hello
I'm Dr Jennifer Scally
MBChB, BSc, MRCGP, DRCOG, DipION, DipCBH
Founder of The Metabolic Health Doctor
I'm truly dedicated to empowering individuals to take control of their metabolic health and reduce their risk of chronic metabolic disease.
As a medical NHS doctor for 17 years and a GP for 11 of those, I have witnessed how we are sabotaging our health through the lifestyle choices we make. I have also witnessed how making small lifestyle shifts can result in huge health gains. The earlier we make these changes the better but it’s certainly never too late.
The prevalence of chronic diseases in our society continues to rise with one in four people in the UK suffering from two or more chronic diseases; such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension and type II diabetes. Poor metabolic health is at the root of most of our chronic diseases and shows up in a number of ways often silently to begin with. Weight gain, reduced energy levels, muscle aches, brain fog, frequent infections, fatigue, pre-diabetes, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, gout and fatty liver are the most common warning signs I see in my patients in General Practice. In females earlier warning signs might be a diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Gestational Diabetes or stubborn weight gain in perimenopause.
I believe in the power of food to nourish the body, mind, and soul.
Building healthy habits
The good news is, the risk of developing most of these chronic diseases is reduced by making healthier lifestyle choices. I appreciate that life can be challenging and it is not always easy to make the ‘healthiest choice’. I’m a busy working Mum who yes sometimes after a long day and a bedtime battle with my little one I dip into that box of chocolates because hey ‘I deserve a treat’. Neither my choice of food nor the mindset that accompanies it is ideal but firstly by becoming more aware of the habit I am learning how to break the cycle. Living a healthy life is not about aiming for perfection but about building daily habits that tip the balance on most days in favour of health and not illness.
My Mission
As a GP, when treating patients with chronic disease I have felt I had little to offer other than brief lifestyle advice usually rushed at the end of a ten minute consultation and an endless list of prescription medications which in themselves come with their own risks. With a dedication to offer more to my patients and ensure it was based on the latest scientific evidence, I embarked on a journey over the last 4 years to educate myself by exploring the disciplines of Integrative Functional Nutrition, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy and Functional Medicine equipping myself with a range of tools to integrate into conventional medical practice. Through my learning over the years I have come to realise that the commonality amongst most of our chronic diseases is a slow insidious decline in the state of our metabolic health.
My mission is now to improve the metabolic of health of as many people as possible. I believe in the power of food to nourish the body, mind, and soul. I also strongly believe that our mindset can either sabotage or heal our health. The Metabolic Health Doctor is committed to helping you make sustainable and positive changes to achieve optimal metabolic health, stave off chronic disease and ultimately prolong your healthspan.
